VJ 101: visuals workshop at the Museum of Neon Art

LAVA is having a VJ 101 workshop for beginners, hosted by the Museum of Neon Art at downtown Los Angeles on Sunday May 9th. This 5 hour workshop will cover the history of VJing, content creation, basic setup, hands-on software tutorial using AVmixer Pro, and how to use Game/MIDI devices as controllers. There will be a hands-on practice session and free soda provided by Jaritos. Pre-registration is recommended due to limited capacity of 20, there is a $10 workshop fee ($8.00 for MONA members).

This five-hour workshop will cover:
Basic hardware techniques for video mixing:
- optimal workstation setup (for both Mac and PC)
- input and output configuration (for both Mac and PC)
- MIDI controller overview and setup using a variety of input devices including game controllers
Basic software techniques for video mixing:
- video input and capture configurations (for both Mac and PC)
- basic playback controls
- compositing techniques
- Freeframe FX (installation, configuration, usage)
SPEAKERS:
Amy Alexander//VJ Übergeek is a new media, audiovisual, and performance artist who has worked in film, video, music, programming and information technology as well as in digital media art. She is an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego. Besides southern California, she can occasionally be found in Philadelphia and New Jersey.
James Cui/VJ Fader is a visual designer who expresses music through interactive video performance. He is creator of AV Mixer Pro, and is currently co-director of LAVA (Los Angeles Video Artists), an organized community of video artists working primarily in the field of live video mixing and improvised visuals.
Eric Medine/MkUltra is a Los Angeles area artist working in multimedia and video art, and co-director of LAVA. He has shown work at the Angels Gate Art Center, Track 16 Gallery, the SuperSonic Exhibition, Andrew Shire Gallery, and the KunstVlaai Exhibition in Amsterdam. He has given numerous lectures, workshops, and presentations on topics such as curating electronic art, hacking video game hardware, and software programming for live video exhibitions.
Things to Bring:
Bring your PC or Mac laptop, recommended specs: 1 gigs ram, 1.5 ghz processor, at least 1 gigs available hard drive space for installing demo software. You will also need to bring an external hard drive/USB thumb drive with 1 gig of free space for file swapping.

- Free VJ loops
